I rarely do a public post, but with LJ being a ghost town of tumbleweeds and creepy wind chimes, I thought I'd make an exception.

Ask me anything. I'll answer truthfully.

Dear Sir.

I ordered a coffemaker from Kohls.com and when it arrived, the brew basket (a vital part of the machinery) was missing. I wrote to Kohls, who said that the item was out of stock and they couldn't replace it. I wanted to keep it because I'd used a gift card to pay for it and had since given the gc away so a friend could use the buck or two left on it for her next Kohls visit.

So then I wrote to the manufacturer, Hamilton Beach, and they said they'd be willing to help. I could order the brew basket online from them, of course, but it would cost as much as the coffee maker once shipping is included. I asked them if I could get a free basket or just free shipping. "Jordan" asked to see the receipt, so I sent them both the email reciept and my Kohls account screenshot.

I haven't heard back, but they have another day to respond per their automated "sproing! we got your message" message.

The thing is, I'm kinda hoping they won't write back tomorrow so that I can send the following:

Dear Sir,

I can only assume that Jordan was fired or ran away to join a traveling circus. Hence I am writing back to you, not at all like a nagging spouse, to inquire as to the status of my request for a replacement brew basket. Seriously, you guys have no idea how much I need this coffee maker. I've been dealing with a french press for a while now, but in addition to a repugnant obsession with smelly cheeses I wind up with soggy coffee grounds in places you really don't want to know about, and personally I find it hard to walk in a straight line most mornings much less do anything that requires measuring and/or boiling water.

Don't get me wrong, the press is delightful on weekends or when I want to impress my fiance and make her think that I'm some kind of fancypants coffee snob, but really in order to function I require coffee every morning and I'm going to admit right now that I've earned far more free mochas from McDonald's in their so-called "cafe" club than any person with some small amount of personal pride should reasonably claim.

Normally I like getting free things -- like a brew basket for instance -- but really those tawdry cafe cards with their bright red stickers are like scarlett letters for my wallet. Oh, how the mighty have fallen. What, they couldn't put in a Tim Horton's on my drive into work?

So anyway, I'd just really appreciate some kind of word about where things might be with that request. I'm attaching a picture of me and the coffeemaker, sans brewbasket, and one picture of my cat. There still aren't enough cat pictures floating around the internet. I have a video too, if you'd like to see that.

Regards,

Custardfairy

P.S. The video is of my cat, not of me and the coffee maker.

Without having checked her blog on the subject, I wanted to point out that the recent WTF-ness that happened in regards to The Hunger Games character Rue, who was certainly a person of color and described as such in the book, being the cause of wailing and whinging by people who supposedly read the book yet insisted that an actress of color in that role "ruined" the movie, also happened (happens, is happening) with at least one character in Cat Valente's Orphan's Tales. From an interview on ABW in 2007:

Catherynne: Well, Tommy is Japanese–in fact her whole story takes place in an analogue of Japan, so all the characters there are Asian. Sigrid is black–which has resulted in the most bizarre conversations, where I mention that, and a reader will blink and say “No she’s not.” At which point I blink, and assure them that she is. And then I have to quote my own book in regards to the brownness of her skin, which is mentioned repeatedly. (emphasis mine)

So, default = white, and even when the author herself states that a character is a person of color, some of the readership will insist otherwise. WTF, indeed.

Tonight and next Monday are new member nights for OLC! I'm excited!

If you want to join a queer choir, come see us at Trinity Lutheran (lower level) on Stadium at 7pm. This season we're singing songs about Michigan, or by people with a Michigan connection. The May show is Out Loud Sings YES! to Michigan! :D

Originally posted by [livejournal.com profile] issendai at WARNING: Purina pet food has started making pets ill

My coworker John told me that his cat was seriously ill--throwing up, lethargic, refusing food, dropping weight. The previously healthy 6-year-old, 15-pound cat had lost a third of her body weight over the last few months. The vet couldn't find anything wrong with her. Blood tests were clean, and she didn't have any known illnesses. Yet she was a few days from organ failure.

That was a week ago. She's fine now. The solution was... to stop feeding her Purina cat food.

When John told me that, and said that friends of his had the same problem with their cats and Purina cat food, I looked into it. Holy shit. Take a look at the consumer complaints about Purina cat and dog food. This exact same problem has been an issue with Purina pet foods since 2007, but since this summer, the rate of complaints has picked up drastically. People who previously had no problems with Purina are reporting issues. Comment after comment sounds the same:

I've been feeding my three cats Fancy Feast canned food Chopped Grill Feast for many years. They have always devoured their meal and licked the plates clean. Last week, I noticed they did not want to eat much and went from plate to plate, ate a little. Next day, none of them would eat it. I kept trying new cans. What they did eat made them vomit and one cat was lethargic for days. I refuse to buy any more of this food. It's very scary. I don't know what is wrong with the food, but I fear it has toxins in it. I switched to another brand and the cats are fine now. Did anyone else experience this?

-----

My dogs have been eating Purina Dog Chow (green bag) for about four years. They used to eat only Iams, but due to financial issues, we had to go with a cheaper brand. The last bag I purchased was about a week and a half ago. My 14 years old Labrador has vomited about 5-6 times and my German Shepherd has vomited about 4 times. Something is wrong with this food! The food has a kind of metallic smell to it. It just does not smell right. I'm taking it back to the pet store. I am changing my dogs' food, it's just not worth taking the chance to save a few dollars.

-----

We purchased a large bag of Purina One Salmon dry cat food to give to a needy pet owner. She emailed us a couple of days later ,to say that there were maggots, lots of them with what looked to be like strands or webs with more dead gnats or flies, pieces of web in the food and "shells" of gnats or flies in the bag. Cats would not eat much of the food and, fortunately, they did not get sick. The store had noticed this problem in other bags and was willing to swap out.

-----

I purchased a 34 lb bag of Purina One Smartblend dog food every three to four weeks for my two Labradors. The last bag I purchased seemed fine until I noticed a new infestation of little black bugs. Upon further inspection through the contents of the bag, I noticed clusters of white "eggs" adhered to quite a bit of the food. Some of these clusters contained larvae in the process of hatching. I immediately threw out the remaining contents of the bag but did save samples for my vet.

We went out of town last weekend and had friends dog sit for us. We originally attributed their lethargy and random vomiting to separation anxiety. Although they are doing better, I am still concerned and will be watching them closely. As stated, I saved samples of the infested dog food for our vet in the event that anything results from this issue.

-----

I recently switched to the Friskies Poultry Variety pack (32 cans) that says it must be used by August 2013 (12281789 09:31 lo61237) sku (050000454242). I have 5 cats and feeding them this food, I noticed some of them throwing up. There's nothing in it but liquids, no hair ball, no food, nothing. My cats range from 8 weeks to 13 years old.

I switched my own cats to Purina a couple of months ago, and their coats look so much better than they did on the old brand of cat food... but Buffy has started vomiting stomach liquids. Purina and Fancy Feast are off the menu. Permanently.

I have no idea why this isn't news. But if you're feeding your pets any Purina brand, please don't wait for media confirmation that something is going on. Stop feeding your pets Purina immediately.

If anyone was actually on LJ anymore, today would be a day when I'd ask you to tell me something smutty.

In case someone does, comments screened. Permission to unscreen must be explicit. Anon available.

Initial post

tl;dr - Friend's family home destroyed by fire and his parents & grandparents are now homeless and in need of basic necessities. Currently staying with neighbors.

They also need some of the following:

- sheets (queen)
- towels
- kitchen utensils
- cookware
- shelf stable foods (canned, boxed, etc)
- bedding (comforters, pillows, etc)

I'm going to be sending a care package myself, so if you're local I can get these items from you. If you'd prefer to send a box yourself I will get an address where they can be delivered.

Please help!

As an update to yesterday's post about the house fire that burned my friend's family's house to the ground, Phil has let me know that his parents and grandparents are currently staying with neighbors. There were some summer clothes in storage in the unattached garage that they were able to salvage, but only a few pieces. Nothing that was in the house was salvaged.

I asked if we could maybe set up a Paypal "Donate" button or something for them and he said it would be appreciated, but I'm not sure if I need to do anything in particular to make that happen. Do I need to set up a different email address? Has anyone done this and do you have suggestions?

If Columbus Day does anything, it should remind us of pride, greed, and self-righteousness.  I suppose it's become popular in the last decade or so to deride Columbus, but popularity is not always a bad thing.  I am glad I was born in the United States and I know that I did not personally have much to do with the current state of indigenous culture because I wasn't here when those decisions were made.  But I am here now.

I don't propose that anyone pull up stakes and head out, but I do propose that we be aware of the current state of things with regard to native culture(s), ways of living, beliefs, experiences, and future.  Instead of celebrating Columbus Day by praising the systematic destruction of many cultures (the idea that one must break eggs to make omelets should never extend to genocide, friends), I am thinking about those who survived even when my ancestors did everything possible to diminish them.

I'm going to try to spend as little money as possible over the next week without actually going without.  That means being resourceful, looking first at thrift stores and the dollar store for anything I do need, and being at least a little bit less of a consumer hooer.

I'm posting this link for Kelley, for inspiration, but also because I love Amy Sedaris and because everyone should have a craft.

(Amy's latest book was titled "Crafting for Poor People," which I love because she's cheap and also I am tight with money.)

Oh, bother.  I went to Comcast as Cecil instructed but was told they have to ship a new wireless router.  It will likely be Monday before I'm fully functional again.

When I can afford it, I'm just going to buy my own.
